Welcome to POL 106 (H)!
I would ask some foolish question like, "how has your summer been", but I assume I already know the answer. It just started! This class is will be an introduction to American government, but with a twist. Everything that we will do in this class is going to have a real world application. I feel that college classes are worthless unless they have some relevance to your life, right now. The challenge is to see how these topics actually effect you. We will be reading our main text (Keeping the Republic) as well as, Where Does the Money Go? Both of these books should strengthen your knowledge of contemporary political issues.
You will also be asked to write and maintain your own blog over the next few weeks. Social media is one of the hottest trends in politics and seems to have found a place to stay in mainstream America. Shortly I will be providing you with information on how to set up your own blog and how to maintain it over the next 4 weeks. Looking forward to working with the best and the brightest of ISU. Welcome to POL 106 (H) Summer 2009!!!!!

Woo! I guess I'm the first one to jump on the ball here.
ReplyDeleteMy name is actually Mary Williams in your book, but I go by Alli. Sorry for the confusion. It is the worst part of the first day of classes.
I also have a 3 week class going that started today. The first couple weeks should be quite a challenge to stay on top of everything. I can't wait to get started though!
It says my name is Mary, but i prefer to be called Mary Kate. I think i set up the blog right, but I am technologically challenged. I started a 6 week online class today and I start your class along with First Aid on Monday. I hope they are all manageable and interesting.
ReplyDeleteI, too, will be taking another course (CJS 206) this summer, but it does not start until the Monday after this class ends. Last summer, I took a 3-week class, and it was not too bad. I hope that this course will be manageable as well. The material should be interesting, and I know that we will all get a lot out of this time.
ReplyDeleteThough you did not actually ask the foolish question, I do have an answer that you probably would not expect. After finishing finals on Wednesday, I celebrated my birthday with some of my friends and my family on the 7th. On Friday and Saturday, I worked at all four of the graduation ceremonies at Redbird. I ended up knowing quite a few of the people graduating, and I was excited for them. I have a few more plans this week, and I’m sure things will really pick up once class begins. I look forward to meeting all of you soon.
My name is probably Abigail on your list but I prefer Abby. This is the only class I am taking this summer so I am looking forward to being able to focus my time and energy on one subject (and hopefully that will bring good results!) See you next Monday..
ReplyDeleteSee you on Monday! Hopefully I won't be sunburned after 3 straight days of Redbird Baseball!
ReplyDeleteHELL-o! My names Carina. I go by Cari, but only in Spanish (its fun hearing people say it when they aren't Spanish speaking) Luckily this is the only class I'm taking this semester!
ReplyDeleteA bit of background info... I was a freshman at ISU Fall of '08, then had some medical issues. I currently live back home in Grayslake, a Northwest suburb of Chicago. Yet, I'll be moving back to Blo-No in exactly 30 hours! I'm not counting down though.
I evidently had no idea what I was doing and did a blog under blog.com instead of blogger.com.... WOW! What people do when they've been awake for 49 hours =p so to clear the confusion I'll write what I wrote earlier...

HEY!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Brianna, and I go by Brianna, so you don't have to worry about changing my name in the book! I'm pretty excited about this class. My friend took it, though it wasn't honors, and said it was really interesting. I am also taking math 120 for 8 weeks, and it starts the same day as this one, and as soon as this class ends, i start another 4 week, so the summer will be busy but I love having things to do! See you all on Monday!
Hello!!!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jasmine!!!
This summer has just began and i am excited to start this summer of with a bang! I have two four week classes that began this Monday. My other class that i am taking is Art 176, so i plan to work hard and to learn new things in both courses...
Have a great summer!!
I am a little weary about this course, I am not much into politics and dont know much about it personally. ALthough i have heard a lot of good things about you as a professor and hopefully i will benefit from this course, and my final gen ed will be a memorable/enjoyable course. Hopefully these 4 weeks fly by... because time flies when youre having fun right?
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Tim, most likely Timothy on your list. I am somewhat nervous about this class but I think that just as long as I put in the effort I'll be fine. I'm a 23 year old junior, a bit older than most everyone else in my classes. However, this was not all due to countless nights of binge drinking and skipping class. I was in the Marines for 4 years and just decided that earning a degree was the next step I wanted to take. I'm looking forward to this class and will see you tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Dusti Foster and I am a junior. I am taking a bunch of summer classes and I'm really nervous that I will not be able to fit it all in. I ran a half-marathon up in Green Bay this morning, so honestly, tomorrow I probably will not seem so cheery. I really hope this class is interesting and I am looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! =)
ReplyDeleteHI my name is Nicole, and I can remain as Nicole in the books and wherever else I may be found. It is now 2:06 am, and as could maybe be guessed I am a night owl. However, this slight detail may pose a problem as I am also technologically challenged. Not doing too bad, thank goodness this sight is easy to figure out. =) Quite a pleasant surprise I will admit. I am taking another class for four weeks this summer, it starts in about 6 hours actually. Abnormal Psychology, should be quite a blast I am anticipating. Reading the comments above I am glad to see I am not the only crazy kid taking two classes at the same time!!!! Can't wait. See you all tomorrow afternoon!!
ReplyDeleteHello my name is Peggy Riessen. I started am taking 2 courses this summer. My other class also starts today, going to be tough, but I think I'll be able to manage. Looking forward to the class and being able to understand and possibly enjoy politics
ReplyDeleteI wasn't going to take any summer courses this summer and wound up taking 9 hrs. I don't know what I was thinking. Well, I'm glad I took this class because my 8 o'clock class is going to be a complete snore and the instructor is a droner. LOL! I don't think that will be the case with this class.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Hannah! I'll be a sophomore in the fall. I'm also taking a class in microeconomics this summer; hopefully it will be as interesting as POL 106...well, I can dream. I like learning about politics, but I hate getting into arguments about it. Oh well, maybe this class will help me with my argumentation skills.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name's Blake. I'm looking forward to class today :)
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Ashleen Bracey. Excited to be in your class... Hope its interesting!
